Antrim so close in Westmeath
Westmeath V Antrim Littlewoods Ireland Div2 Camogie
The 17 Antrim camógs who journeyed through the bumpy Westmeath back roads to Kinnegad's Coralstown GAC can be justly proud of their performances despite losing by two points. This depleted county squad fought every inch of the way to a narrow defeat on a day in which two of our senior county camogie clubs were playing challenge games.
Antrim got off to a great start with Nicole O'Neill pointing a free and Emma Connor hand-passing a fine goal and O'Neill almost made it a five point lead as she narrowly missed converting a long range free. Laverty and Mulholland were bossing the mid field for Antrim in the opening 15 minutes but Westmeath gradually came into the game with a Dinah Loughlin free followed by a Pamela Greville goal which levelled the scores. Westmeath pushed on and two nice points from play via the stick of Loughlin put them in the driving seat. Antrim battled hard with Emma Connor taking a superb point from play but another point from the very accurate Loughlin left a half time score of
Westmeath 1-04 Antrim 1-02
The second half saw Antrim with a slight breeze in their favour pegging Westmeath back to a one point lead as O'Neill converted another placed ball but a rather dubious free awarded to Westmeath allowed Loughlin to score again. Niamh and Kathryn Donnelly worked hard at the back for the Saffrons as the game rose to a hectic pace and captain Katie McAleese was in the thick of the action. Antrim missed a couple of frees which would have levelled the game and Maédhbh Laverty restored it to a one point differential with a superb score on the run. Westmeath replied almost instantly however as Muireann Scally took a close range point. O'Neill split the posts again for Antrim from all of fifty metres in great style . A battle of attrition developed with some physical challenges on both sides and a few questionable refereeing decisions went the way of the home side in terms of three successive frees awarded much to Antrim's consternation, all of which were put away by Loughlin to take her tally for the day to 8 points. Antrim fought to the bitter end with Laverty and McAleese putting over points from play but time ran out for them just as the sun started to shine in Kinnegad and Westmeath ran out rather fortunate winners by a final score of Westmeath 1-09 Antim 1-07.
