Antrim win well in Portaferry
Littlewoods Ireland Camogie leagues Div 2 -Down V Antrim from Portaferry
Referee - Eamon Cassidy Derry Down 0-10 Antrim 1-18
Antrim kept up their winning ways today at a cold ,breezy St. Patrick's GAC pitch. The fact that Antrim led the game from throw -in to final whistle does not do justice to a home side who were excellent at times and took some fine scores in an entertaining game. The Saffrons faced a strong breeze but still managed to be four points up within ten minutes of the throw-in. A free and a point from play by captain Katie McAleese and an Orlagh O'Hara point gave Antrim a great start before Sarah Louise Carr opened Down's account from a free. Katie McAleese, in great playing form, soon tapped over another free and an impressive point from play against the wind. The visitors looked sharper than they have been all season and put in a lot of work defending their lead. Niamh Mallon on her home pitch and the ever impressive Sarah Louise Carr both snatched points from play as Down surged forward but Antrim came back with another McAleese free following a rough tackle on Christine Laverty. Down finished the first half full of fight by pulling back two more points via the hurls of Paula O'Hagan and Dearbhla Savage to leave an interval score of Down 0-05 Antrim 0-06 and everything still to play for .
Antrim came out for the second half in rip-roaring form and as in the first half took the first four scores. Three of these were frees converted by Katie McAleese but the fourth was a fine goal from Orlagh O'Hara who jumped high to smash home a free dropped invitingly onto the edge of the square by McAleese. Down seemed to let their heads drop after this goal and although O'Hagan converted a couple of frees and Dearbhla Savage scored a neat point after a solo run, Antrim always appeared to be on top as they took the next seven scores without response with Katie McAleese (3), Orlagh O'Hara (2), Caoimhe Wright and Finvola McVeigh all taking points from long range. Aileen McManus looked supreme in marshalling an excellent Antrim defence which minimised the effectiveness of Mallon, Carr ,McAleenan and Savage. Down refused to give up and managed three late points from Katie McGilligan, Carr and a free from Niamh Mallon but points from Katie McKillop and O'Hara put the game well beyond the home team's grasp as Antrim ran out worthy winners on a final score of Down 0-10 Antrim 1-18.
