Loughgiel retain Intermedaite crown
Antrim Intermediate final
Loughgiel 3-13 Brídíní Óga Glenravel 1-10
Two Charley McCarry goals as the game slipped into injury time sealed a third successive Antrim Intermediate title for Loughgiel in Ahoghill last night.
It was an evening where experience carried Loughgiel into a winning position against a team that simply couldn’t reproduce their semi-final form and once the Shamrocks got ahead they were able to stay the distance.
Five points from the Lynn sisters during the first half put the holders on top and they led by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break having played into the breeze. Their catching and striking were just that bit better than the Glenravel outfit who battled to the end before getting the reward of a goal from Torie Edgar.
Katie McKillop was strong at full-back with the half-back line turning a lot of ball. Up front the pace of the Lynns caused damage in the first half while it was the opportunism of Charley McCarry during the second half.
Glenravel didn’t have that composure in possession. They worked hard throughout, none more so than Bronagh Laverty, Ellen Hynds and Maeve Mulholland in defence, Laoise McKenna and Shauna Kelly further out, but didn’t take the early scores to settle and paid the price.
A feature of the game was that no fewer than 13 players hit the target, although it took all of 11 minutes before Niamh McKay opened the scoring. That drew an excellent response from Katie Lynn and Loughgiel went on to lead by 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes. However points from frees from Caoimhe Duffin (2) and a late score from Shauna Kelly left three between the teams at the break.
Annie Lynn had scored three excellent points on the end of solo runs during that period for Loughgiel and she broke for her fourth on the resumption while Meadhbh McCormick placed Charley McCarry for the opening goal in the 33rd minute.
From that score Loughgiel controlled exchanges and the Glenravel girls couldn't get any closer than six points throughout the second half.
There were a couple of goal chances for Molly Woulahan and Ashling Millar, but Katie McKillop cleared one and the other resulted in a point.
Then Charley McCarry killed the game with two strikes inside 30 seconds in the 59th minute. There were seven minutes of injury time and Torie Edgar fired in a late 1-1 as consolation for Brídíní Óga who are left disappointed at the final stage for the third successive season.
