Westmeath V Antrim Intermediate Championship Final group game
Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Group 2
Westmeath 4-12 Antrim 1-12
It didn’t really matter who won this championship tie in Kinnegad as neither team could progress in the competition.
While the home side fielded a more recognisable line-out, Antrim brought forward many of the minor winning side who had edged home against Westmeath in the All-Ireland final in Drogheda.
Two of those youngsters, who incidentally are eligible again for minor next season, excelled for the seniors. Both Maeve Kelly and Roisin McCormick got on the score-sheet with kelly working very hard around the midfield area and McCormick a huge threat in the forward line any time the sliotar came in her direction.
Overall it was a competitive enough game, particularly during the opening half at the end of which Westmeath, with goals from Megan Dowdall, Shiela McGrath and Mairead McCormack, led by 3-4 to 1-7.
McCormick was the goal-scorer, a fine finish, and she added two points, while captain Katie McAleese tagged on three points.
After the break Pamela Greville shot a fourth Westmeath goal and they were never in danger of losing the game despite some excellent point-taking from the Saffrons, Kirsten Edgar, McCormick and Maeve Kelly in particular.
Antrim : Roisin McCormick (1-4), Katie McAleese (0-4, 0-2 frees), Maeve Kelly (0-2), Caoimhe McAleenan (0-1), Kirsten Edgar (0-1).
Westmeath : Pamela Greville (1-5, 0-5 frees), Megan Dowdall (1-2), Shiela McGrath (1-2), Máiréad McCormick (1-1), Hannah Core (0-1), Ciara O’Looney (0-1). Report by S.McAleenan
